Scientific and methodical online seminar “An integrated approach to the teaching of private international law and international commercial arbitration”

On February 1, 2019, the Department of International Law of the Law Faculty of the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilev together with the European Humanitarian University (Vilnius, Lithuania) held a scientific and methodical online seminar "Integrated approach to the teaching of international private law and international commercial arbitration".

Professor of the Department of Law of the European Humanitarian University K. I. Ivanov, faculty and students of the Department of International Law of the Eurasian National University of ENU took part in the online seminar. L.N. Gumilyov.

Doctor of Law K. I. Ivanov made a report online from Vilnius. In his report “The urgency of teaching the disciplines of the cycle of international commercial law and international arbitration”, K. I. Ivanov reviewed some of the current problems associated with teaching and constructing courses on private international law and international commercial arbitration and offered his own vision of solving these problems. In particular, it was noted that now in the CIS and the European Union a quantitative surge of international arbitration institutions, however, the lack of personnel, knowledge in this area gives grounds to increase the amount of hours for disciplines of international commercial arbitration.

Then, the senior lecturer of the International Law Department, Zh. T. Iskakova, made a presentation on the issue of the implementation of the International Arbitration education program in the magistracy. It was noted that the educational program “International Arbitration”, designed for undergraduates of the specialty “International Law”, is aimed at training specialists with all the necessary skills and competencies for the professional work of a lawyer in the field of international arbitration and the development of personal qualities necessary for successful professional activity of a lawyer .

The seminar also heard the report of the first-year doctoral student G. Bulatov “Actual problems of teaching private international law”. The speaker spoke about the need to change the existing traditional approaches to the teaching of private international law, since, in his opinion, they are outdated and create additional unjustified difficulties both in the study and in the teaching process.

During the seminar, the head of the Department of International Law of ENU, Doctor of Laws, Professor Sh. V. Tlepina spoke. According to Professor Sh. V. Tlepina, continuous close cooperation between the Department of International Law of the ENU and the Department of Law of the European Humanitarian University gives concrete results. In particular, the joint study program “International Commercial Arbitration” was developed for students of the Master's program in International Law, and this seminar is another opportunity to exchange experience and develop new approaches for teaching a whole block of disciplines.
