The Department of International Law has opened the annual VIII International Scientific and Practical School of international law

Since 2011, the Department of International Law has been conducting scientific and practical schools on topical issues of international law  and  2021 wasn’t  exception.

On November 25, 2021, the opening of the VIII International Scientific and Practical School on International Law took place on the topic: "Actual problems of theory, practice and teaching of international law." The lecturers of the school are Kazakh and foreign professors, scientists, representatives of state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, practitioners in the field of international law. Foreign lecturers are representatives of such universities as the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (Moscow, Russia), the European Humanities University (Vilnius, Lithuania), the Moscow State Law University. O.E. Kutafina (Moscow State Law Academy) (Moscow, Russia), Saratov State Law Academy (Saratov, Russia), Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University (KFU, Kazan, Russia), Southern Federal University (Rostov-on- Don, Russia).

The purpose of the SPS  is the formation of professional competence  (knowledge, skills and abilities) of the future international lawyer, discussion of current topics and various issues in the field of the theory of international law; strengthening the practice-oriented approach to training specialists in the field of international law; exchange of experience in teaching disciplines of international law.

The opening of the International Scientific and Practical School was moderated by a senior lecturer, acting Head of the Department of International Law, Akshalova Roza Dzharasovna, who spoke about the history of such a format of a scientific event, previous lecturers of the scientific and practical school. So, I would like to note that the scientific and practical school on international law was held in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 (spring).

The first day of the International Scientific and Practical School was devoted to arbitration issues. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), acting as invited lecturers. Associate Professor of the Department of International Law of L.N. Gumilyova, Zhanna Turkistanovna Iskakova and representatives of the international law firm Reed Smith LLP .                                                

Iskakova Zh.T. in her speech on the topic: "Reflections on international commercial arbitration and some problems of education in higher educational institutions in the context of studying international commercial arbitration" told the students of the school about the advantages of arbitration in modern conditions, as well as about practice-oriented training in the classroom on the discipline "International commercial arbitration".

Several lecturers from the International  legal  Firm Reed Smith were: Suzie Savage, Counsel, Lucy Winnington-Ingram, Associate, Rachel Mintah. Trainee Solicitor. The topics of their speeches were: “Amendments to arbitral rules, including proposed amendments to the ICSID Rules and the ICSID - UNCITRAL Code of Conduct”, “ Causation in investment arbitration ". The lecturers spoke about the settlement of disputes between the investor and the state, the impact of COVID-19 on this mechanism, the concept and features of a causal relationship, and damage mitigation. The final part of the speech by Susie Savage and Lucy Winnington-Ingram about the expected skills and competencies of a future lawyer, practical training and internships in international legal  firms also aroused particular interest among the students. 

The lecture aroused the interest of the audience. Students of the school had a unique opportunity to enrich their knowledge of international commercial and investment arbitration. This lecture was useful not only for teachers, but also for students.
