The Department of International Law celebrated the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the UN Day round table

August 29, 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site by the decree of the President of the Kazakh SSR N.A.  Nazarbayev.  The first nuclear test was carried out on August 29, 1949; a total of 468 tests were carried out on its territory.  On December 2, 2009, at the sixty-fourth session of the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of the Republic of Kazakhstan, resolution 64/35 was unanimously adopted, declaring August 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

In order to attract the attention of students to nuclear disarmament, on October 28, 2021, the Department of International Law of ENU held a number of events to celebrate the United Nations Day and the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site:

- from 12 to 24 October 2021 - a competition for the best essay dedicated to the United Nations Day and the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, on the topic: "A world without nuclear weapons" in three languages;

- October 28, 2021 - Model UN Security Council on the topic: "The situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the security of Central Asia" in English;

- October 28, 2021 - a round table dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, the 30th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the UN Day, the 25th anniversary of the ENU. L.N. Gumilyov on the topic: "The contribution of the Republic of Kazakhstan to international security and nuclear disarmament" in Russian.

The moderator of the round table was the senior lecturer of the Department of International Law, acting  Head of the Department of International Law, Akshalova Roza Dzharasovna.  The guest and main speaker was the first secretary of the International Security Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nogaybayev Timur Satylganovich.  T. Nogaybayev's report on the topic "Participation of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons" aroused great interest of the students.  A third-year student of the multilingual group Aubakirov Beybarys also made a report on the topic: "The Republic of Kazakhstan's renunciation of nuclear weapons as an important step towards gaining independence”.

 

After the conclusion of the discussion, a ceremony of presenting diplomas and gifts to the winners of the competition for the best essay took place, dedicated to the United Nations Day and the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site on the topic: "A world without nuclear weapons.

 

According to the results of the competition for the best essay, the winners were: Abdulazizzoda Aziza (4th year student of the Department of International Law) - 1st place, Rustamova Sabrina (2nd year student of the Department of International Law) - 2nd place, Kuzbaeva Karina (4th year student of the Department of Criminal Law Disciplines) - 3rd place. All winners were awarded with I, II and III degree diplomas and gifts. 

In addition, certificates were awarded to the participants of the Model UN on the topic: “The situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the security of Central Asia”.  The UN Security Council model was conducted in English by the members of the Scientific-Research club “International lawyer’s club”.

The round table ended with joint photography and wishes of success to all students.
