The Republican Subject Olympiad on International Law was held on 28 November, 2020

The Republican Subject Olympiad is held annually to test knowledge and identify the general level of training of International Law students. The coronavirus pandemic did not become an obstacle to organizing such an event in 2020, as it was held online on the Microsoft Teams platform.

In the Olympiad, organized by the Department of International Law of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, participated the teams of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Suleiman Demirel University, E.A. Buketov Karaganda University and Turan University.

The Olympiad comprised three rounds. The first round was held in the form of a test in the Kazakh aiming to test knowledge of the theory of public international law. The objective of the second round was to identify the level of knowledge of theory and glossary on international law in English. It was held orally, with each of the participants answering two questions. The third round of the Olympiad was also organized in the form of a test, but was held in Russian. In the third round, the participants solved situational problems within the framework of private international law.

The Olympiad on International Law was distinguished not only by the trilingual format, but also by the “international” composition of the jury. It included not only Kazakhstani but foreign practicing experts and scholars too. Among them are Vyacheslav Vyacheslavovich Gavrilov, Doctor of Law, Professor, Head of the Department of International Public and Private Law of the School of Law of the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok, Russia); Tolstykh Vladislav Leonidovich, Doctor of Law, Professor, Research Supervisor of the Higher School of Law of O.E. Kutafin Moscow State Law University (Moscow, Russia); Ivanov Konstantin Igorevich, Doctor of Law, Associate Professor of European Humanities University (Vilnius, Lithuania), business coach; Kypshakbaev Rustam Sardarbekovich, graduate of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, National Consultant for Central Asia of the UN Human Rights Office. All members of the jury are permanent partners and friends of the Department of International Law of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University who regularly take part in scientific events organized by it.

It is worth mentioning that the Olympiad on International Law was a platform for the exchange of views and experience on the development of its concept. The jury members took an active part in the discussion of each of the rounds of the Olympiad, commented on the performances of the participants, exchanged experience in holding such events abroad, and also expressed ideas concerning changing the format of the Olympiad. The valuable recommendations of the jury members were noted by the Organizing Committee and representatives of the participating universities.
